Walking around the city
One of the most, if not the most, beautiful cities in Greece, Nafplio was the first capital of modern Greece from 1823 to 1834.
Strolling through the charming paved alleys of the old city, visitor will discover ancient walls, medieval castles, statues, Venetian and neoclassical buildings. All of them are historical and architectural gems.
Guest’s attention will be drawn immediately to the blooming bougainvilleas overflowing from the balconies and the courtyards of elegant neoclassical and well-preserved mansions. In the heart of the city stands the Italianate Syntagma Square where you can admire important historic buildings and monuments. The two Turkish mosques, the Archaeological Museum and the Municipal Art Gallery, are among the buildings that stand out. The church of St. Spyridon is quite close, where the first governor of Greece, Ioannis Kapodistrias, was assassinated, as well as the church of St. George boasting important icons and wall paintings, such as a copy of Leonardo da Vinci's "The Secret Dinner". The famous Bourtzi Fortress is, undoubtedly, a landmark of the whole city.
Some places that are definitely worth visiting are the War Museum housed in the building of the first Military Academy, the award-winning Peloponnesian Folklore Museum, the Komboloi Museum, the Town Hall at “Trion Navarhon” Square, the statue of Ioannis Kapodistrias in the square bearing the same name,Theodore Kolokotronis’ Park with his statue standing there, the “Pili Xiras” (Gate).
